Career Management

In re-reading the excellent 1997 Harvard Business School's "In Transition" by ML Burton & RA Wedemeyer, I was reminded of the major steps in executing a career transition and how it in many ways parallels marketing a business with "YOU" as the product.
  • Self-assessment - examining your strengths, interests and experience. There are numerous tools and tests to help you out including Myers-Briggs.
  • Marketing Campaign - establishing the product, market, price/ performance and positioning, assembling the tools: resume, business card, and elevator pitch, and most importantly developing an action plan with deadlines.
  • Networking - make a list of names, your objectives in meeting them, and research them and their organization
  • Interviewing - prepare for the standard questions and behavioural type.
